GLOSSARY OF TERMS

What it Means & How it Relates to Product Selection

We created a Glossary of Terms to connect the dots between what a surgical, medical or product term or phrase may mean and how it might relate to product selection.

The Plain English Descriptions provided are only a layperson's guide. We are not medical professionals, so our Plain English Descriptions are not a medical description or option.

We have also included the Defined Terms used on this website content and/or used in our Terms & Conditions (see Page Footer) to help you understand what they mean.

Searching the Glossary of Terms

When creating our Glossary of Terms we found the traditional A-Z list sometimes only told part of the story because there can be commonly used and technical terms with the same meaning (Abdominoplasty, Tummy Tuck) and there can be several ways of saying the same thing (Asymmetry, Uneven, Unequal, Different, Not Balanced).

So, rather than list every term or phrase separately, we found it quicker, and more informative, to cluster them together.

This is why we have a Search Box instead of the more traditional A-Z list.

Just enter the word you're looking for, then click Search. The search result will list the word you're looking for as well as 'similar, related or also called' words.

Above Knee Measurement

Around the leg, just above the knee cap.

Body Measurement Illustration   Shown in the Fitter’s Size Guide on each product page when needed for garment sizing.

Why is an Above Knee Measurement Needed?   For post-surgery body suits, girdles, shorts and leggings that extend down the leg, measurements are used to check that the shape of the garment matches the shape of the leg. Measuring each leg checks for any difference between the left and right side.

Adjuvant Therapy

Chemotherapy, radiotherapy hormone therapy and targeted treatments that are used after breast cancer surgery.

Why is Adjuvant Therapy Used?   Breast surgery can remove ‘visible’ cancer cells. Chemotherapy, radiation and other treatments are used to target microscopic cancer cells that may not be detected during surgery.

Ankle Measurement

Around the widest part, just above the foot.

Body Measurement Illustration   Shown in the Fitter’s Size Guide on each product page when needed for garment sizing.

Why is an Ankle Measurement Needed?   For post surgery girdles and leggings that extend down the leg, measurements are used to check that the shape of the garment matches the shape of the leg. Measuring each leg checks for any difference between the left and right side.

Anti-Embolism Stocking

A stocking with graduated compression, higher at the ankle and lower towards the knee or upper thigh, that can minimise the risk of blood pooling in the legs during surgery and when hospitalised after surgery.

Anti Embolism Stocking Suggestion   Lipothrombo AD below knee, open toe, graduated compression stocking.

Apron, Apronectomy, Overhanging Abdominal Skin, Pannus

Folds of skin and tissue that overhang the lower abdomen, typically after extreme weight loss.

What to Wear After Apron Surgery   Apron surgery can be similar to a Body Lift. Go to Body Lift to see post-surgery high waist girdles, abdominal binders and NewGel scar management options. When surgery will result in a significant change in body shape, our post-op garment fitting experience suggests a STUDIO Fitting can be a better option.

Areola Reduction Surgery, Nipple and Areola Surgery, Nipple and Areola Reduction

Reducing the size, changing the shape, or correcting asymmetry of the coloured (pigmented) area surrounding the nipple.

What to Wear After Areola Surgery   Areola Reduction Surgery is usually combined with other breast surgery. Go to Breast Implants or Breast Lift or Breast Reduction to see post-surgery compression bra suggestions.

Areola, Areola Mammae, Artificial Nipples

The round or oval shaped coloured (pigmented) area surrounding the nipple.

Arm Lift, Brachioplasty

Reducing excess skin and fat from the underside of the upper arm or upper arm and armpit.

What to Wear After an Arm Lift   Go to Arm Lift to see suggestions for a post-op compression vest with sleeves. Our arm lift fitting experience suggests sizing a compression garment before surgery can be unreliable because of the likely significant change in arm shape after surgery. Ask your surgeon about using medical bandaging in hospital and then sizing your garment after post-op swelling has reduced.

Arm Sleeve, Compression Sleeve, Graduated Compression Sleeve, Lymphoedema Sleeve, Travel Sleeve

Arm Sleeve with Constant Compression   Sleeves with firm and even pressure around the arm, typically used as a post-surgery compression garment to support the area of surgery and lessen pain and discomfort, reduce swelling and bruising, aid body contouring and skin retraction and improve mobility.

Arm Sleeve with Graduated Compression   Sleeves with higher compression at or about the wrist and gradually reducing compression up the arm that are typically used to promote lymph flow when treating and managing lymphoedema and when travelling to reduce the risk of triggering lymphoedema.

Compression Sleeve Options   Go to Compression Sleeves to see arm sleeves with constant and graduated compression. Constant compression sleeves are typically connected across the shoulder or have a ‘short vest’ type top to extend the area of compression beyond the armpit when surgery extends in the underarm. Graduated compression sleeves have varying lower arm compression levels and can have a gauntlet extension.

Armpit, Axilla, Underarm

The slightly hollow area under the arm at the shoulder.

How Does Surgery in the Armpit Affect Garment Suggestion?   If surgery extends up to and/or into the armpit, a post-op compression vest with sleeves can reduce the risk of the garment edge seam sitting over or near the area of surgery.

ARTG, Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods, Therapeutic Goods Administration

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is the Australian Government body responsible for regulating therapeutic goods. These include medical devices such as post surgery compression bras and garments. The Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) is where compression bras and compression garments are listed after assessment.

Artificial Nipples, Stick on Nipples, Tattoo Nipples, Nipple Reconstruction Surgery

When breast reconstruction results in a breast(s) without a nipple and areola, there are product, tattoo and surgical options for recreating the shape and colour of the nipple and areola.

Self-Adhesive Silicone Nipples   Are a way to create the shape and colouring of the nipple and areola without more surgery.

Temporary Tattoo Nipples   Can be a way to ‘see what a nipple and areola might look like’ when deciding about nipple reconstruction surgery or permanent tattooing. Call the STUDIO for more information.

Permanent Nipple Tattooing Uses a three-dimensional image to recreate the look of the nipple and areola.

Surgical Bra for Nipple Reconstruction After breast reconstruction, nipple reconstruction surgery combined with permanent tattooing can recreate the shape and colour of the nipple and areola. Go to Nipple Surgery for information about the ‘low breast area compression bra’ that may be used.

Post Operative Binder Options   Go to Binders to see unisex garment options. Non-split binders can be better for Liposuction surgery. Split panel binders can be better when shaping is needed to support a hernia.

Biocompatibility

A Testing Standard used to verify that a Medical Device placed within the body (e.g. breast implants) will not cause harm.

Products in Contact with the Skin   Biocompatibility can be used as a guideline for assessing products such as Silicone Nipples.

What to Wear After a Body Lift   Go to Body lift and select your type of surgery to see post surgery compression garment and NewGel scar management options. When surgery will result in a significant change in body shape, our post-op garment fitting experience suggests a STUDIO Fitting can be a better option.

Body Suit

A post-surgery compression garment that provides compression and support to the torso, with style variants providing compression to upper leg.

Post Op Body Suit Options   Go to Body Suits to see male and female garment options. Whilst body suits have shoulder straps, the effective area of compression is from the upper chest to the groin (no leg) or upper leg (mid-thigh or above knee).

Bra Band, Back Band, Underarm Band

The band at the bottom of the bra that wraps around the rib cage. The underarm and back parts are elasticised, the section under the breast may be elasticised or non-elasticised.

Fashion Bra Band Comfort After Breast Surgery   After a mastectomy, a slightly wider underarm band can sit over an incision that extends into the underarm and cover the flap of tissue that may be at the end of the incision. If a lumpectomy affects the side of the breast, or if there is a lymph node removal incision in the armpit, look for a slightly lower underarm band width to prevent the edge of the band sitting over tender incisions.

How Can I Compare Bra Bands?   To give you a better way to choose a bra with the band width you need, we put our bras on a mannequin, made side-by-side comparisons, then rated the outcomes to create the Fitted Shape description shown on our bra product pages.

Bra Cleavage, Neckline

The shape and depth of the bra above the breasts that determines the exposure of the breast cleavage.

Fashion Bra Cleavage After Breast Surgery   After a mastectomy, a slightly higher cleavage is needed to conceal the top of the breast form. If a there is a difference in breast shape or size after a lumpectomy or breast reconstruction, a slightly higher cleavage more fully encapsulates the breasts and can balance breast shape.

How Can I Compare Bra Cleavage?   To give you a better way to choose a bra with the cleavage height you need, we put our bras on a mannequin, made side-by-side comparisons, then rated the outcomes to create the Fitted Shape description shown on our bra product pages.

Bra Cups, Soft Cups, Moulded Cups, Padded Cups, Moulded Padded Cups

The soft, moulded or padded fabric shape that encloses, holds and shapes the breasts.

How Fashion Bra Cup Type Affects Breast Shape   Soft cup bras tend to lift and shape the breast and can increase projection. Moulded cup bras tend to have a more rounded shape with less projection. Padded cups bras have a moulded shape, add breast volume and their more structured cup can balance differences in breast shape.

How Can I Compare Bra Cups?   To give you a better way to choose a bra with the cup type you prefer, we put the bra cup type at the start of the bra name, and we include a description of the cup in the Fitted Shape description shown on our bra product pages.

Bra Shoulder Straps, Back Straps

Strips of fabric that, when adjusted correctly, the lift the breast up and into the bra cup and then transfer part of the weight of the breast up over your shoulder and down to the back of the bra band.

How Fashion Bra Straps Affect Wear Comfort?   For everyday wear after breast surgery, slightly wider or wider padded straps reduce pressure on the shoulder and the risk of lymph flow restriction. Beware of non-adjustable straps because the fixed strap length may not suit your torso length.

How Can I Compare Bra Straps?   To give you a better way to choose a bra with the strap width you need, we put our bras on a mannequin, made side-by-side comparisons, then rated the outcomes to create the Fitted Shape description shown on our bra product pages.

Breast Asymmetry, Uneven Breasts, Unequal Breasts, Different Breast Shape, Different Size Breasts, Breasts Not Balanced, Breasts Looks Different, Correcting Breast Shape

When one breast has a noticeable difference in position, size or shape to the other breast (Note: Breasts have a natural asymmetry, but it tends to go unnoticed).

Correcting Uneven Breast Shape & Size   Differences in breast size and shape can become noticeable because of Poland Syndrome or hormone change, during pregnancy and after breast surgery or radiotherapy. Go to corsetry options for balancing breast shape or breast surgery to see post surgery compression bra suggestions for the type of breast surgery being undertaken.

Breast Fold, Inframammary Crease, Inframammary Incision

The breast fold is the natural lower boundary of the breast where the breast and the chest meet. An inframammary incision is made along the breast fold, usually to position a breast implant.

Does Your Surgical Bra Hurt?   After surgery the breast(s) are usually tender and there may be an incision under the breast in the breast fold. If the shoulder straps are done up too tightly, the bra band will be pulled up into the tender breast and/or incision. Go to Wearing Compression Bras for more information.

Breast Forms, Prosthesis, Prostheses, External Breast Prostheses, Silicone Breast Forms, Silicone Breast Shapes, Mastectomy Breast Forms

A weighted silicone breast shape (prosthesis) worn in a pocketed fashion bra after a mastectomy to recreate a natural look breast line. Selection is based on the size, shape, profile, weight and firmness that matches the natural breast.

Breast Stabiliser Band Options   Go to Binders & Band.

Bust Measurement

Around the fullest part of the breast at nipple level when wearing a bra.

Body Measurement Illustration   Shown on each bra product page in the Fitter’s Size Guide.

Why is the Bust Measurement Needed?   For most post-surgery, fashion and sports bras, size has two parts: the underbust measurement that determines band size and then the bust measurement that determines the cup size for that band size. Yes, cup size (volume) changes when the band size changes.

Clip Fastener, Clips, Hook & Eye Fasteners

A fastener comprised of ‘hooks’ or ‘U-shaped’ clips that connects into an ‘eye’ or loop. There are usually one column of hooks and several columns of clips to allow for a tighter or looser fit.

Choosing the Right Clip Fastener   The ‘gauge’ or spacing between each row of hook and eyes can vary between brands. If you need an extender, check that the clip ‘gauge’ matches that of the bra. For bras, the number of hook and eyes can increase as band width is increased for larger cup sizes.

Comfort Bras, Post Surgery Bras

Often called post surgery bras, comfort bras are usually made from softer elasticised material and have lower compression and therefore provide less support than a post-surgery compression bra.

When to Wear a Comfort Bra   Go to Comfort Bras can be better to wear after a lumpectomy, implant removal and radiation when gentle support is needed. Comfort bras, as their name suggests, typically don’t have the higher compression rating needed to support the breast and provide the mobility comfort needed after most breast surgery.

Compression

The capacity of a garment to provide the appropriate type (firm, even or graduated) and amount (millimetres of mercury, mmHg) of pressure. ‘On the body’ compression can vary depending on garment type, fit and care. Methods used to test garment mmHg performance vary between countries, therefore care is needed when specifying, selecting or comparing compression bra and garment performance.

To Drain   Inserting a needle under the skin and then attached it to a syringe to remove a collection of fluid.

Does Your Surgical Bra Hurt After Breast Reconstruction?   When there are drains after a breast reconstruction, loosening the bottom clips of a post-surgery compression bra or adding an extender can reduce the pressure of the band over the drain lines. Go to Wearing Compression Bras for more information.

A post-surgery compression bra with a zip can be difficult to do up if it doesn’t have a bottom starter clip to hold the bottom of the zip in position before doing it up. Post op compression garments with a zip usually have clips under the zip to hold the zip together so it can be done up.

Fitted Shape, Coverage, Area of Compression, Body Cover

The extent to which a garment covers the body. For a compression garment, this is the area of post-operative compression and support, usually over and just beyond the area of the body involved in the surgery. Lymph Nodes, Sentinel Node Biopsy, Axillary Clearance, Axillary Dissection, Axillary Lymph Node Dissection, Lymph Node Removal, Lymphadenectomy

Lymphatic fluid from the breast drains into the axilla lymph nodes and this is why breast cancer cells can spread to the axilla lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are removed when found to contain cancer cells.

Hernia Brief Options   Go to Briefs to see male and female brief options.

Surgical Glue, Medical Glue

A medical version of ‘super glue’ that can hold the incision closed whilst healing, then gradually wear away. Typically used on small incisions that do not require a great deal of strength to be held in place.

Surgical Tape, Medical Tape

Small sterile strips of adhesive material that ‘tape’ the wound closed, typically used on small incisions that do not experience a great deal of stress during healing.

Swim Forms, Aquatic Breast Prothesis, Chlorine Resistant Breast Forms, External Breast Prostheses

A water-resistant, weighted silicone breast shape (prosthesis) worn in a pocketed mastectomy swimsuit to recreate a natural look breast line. Selection is based on the size that matches the breast form worn in a pocketed fashion bra.

Mastectomy Swim Forms   Go to Pool, Beach & Resort to learn more about swim form options after a mastectomy.

Medicare Reimbursement   A refund of up to $400 per breast form is available through the External Breast Prostheses Reimbursement Program (EBPRP). Go to Medicare Refund for more information.

Face-to-Face STUDIO Fitting   Our swim form and pocketed swimwer fitting experience suggests better outcomes can be achieved with a face-to-face fitting.

FaceTime (iPhone) or What’s App (Android) Fitting   When distance is an issue, this option provides the visual input needed for the Fitter to make a more informed suggestion. To ensure your privacy, the Fitter uses one of our Fitting Rooms and nothing is recorded or kept.

Replacement Over the PHONE   If you’re happy with your current swim form, but it is time for replacement, a PHONE call is a quick and easy way to replace your swim form.

Symmastia, Acquired Symmastia

A complication of breast implants when the skin and muscle between the breasts over the sternum (breastbone) detaches and the two pockets of tissue that hold implants form one pocket (Congenital Symmastia is a rare condition resulting in webbing between the natural breasts).

Product Suggestion   Go to the Sternum Bra.

Thigh Lift, Medial Thigh Lift, Inner Thigh Lift, Thighplasty

Reducing sagging skin from the mid-thigh or inner thigh.

What to Wear After a Thigh Lift   Go to Thigh Lift to see low waist to above knee post operative girdles and shorts and NewGel silicone scar management options.

Thigh Measurement

Around the widest part, between the groin and knee.

Body Measurement Illustration   Shown in the Fitter’s Size Guide on each product page when needed for garment sizing.

Why is a Thigh Measurement Needed?   For post-surgery body suits, girdles, shorts and leggings that extend down the leg, measurements are used to check that the shape of the garment matches the shape of the leg. Measuring each leg checks for any difference between the left and right side.

Thromboembolism

Formation in a blood vessel of a clot (thrombus) that breaks loose and is carried by the bloodstream to block another blood vessel.

TRAM Breast Reconstruction, Transverse Rectus Abdominous Muscle Flap Breast Reconstruction

Creating a new breast shape by taking a 'flap' of fat, skin and muscle from the abdomen. For a free TRAM, the flap is removed and reattached. For a pedicled TRAM, the attached flap is moved up under the skin.

What to Wear After TRAM Breast Reconstruction   Go to Breast Reconstruction to learn more about surgical compression bras and abdominal binders, comfort bras for radiation, after recovery lingerie and other breast reconstruction clothing.

TUG Breast Reconstruction, Transverse Upper Gracilis Flap Breast Reconstruction

Creating a new breast shape by taking a 'flap' of skin, fat and the gracilis muscle (free flap) from the upper inner thigh, using a horizontal incision.

What to Wear After TUG Breast Reconstruction   Go to Breast Reconstruction to learn more about surgical compression bras and girdles, comfort bras for radiation, after recovery lingerie and other breast reconstruction clothing.

Tummy Tuck, Abdominoplasty, Mini Tummy Tuck, Apronectomy, Panniculectomy, Partial Abdominoplasty, Fleur-de-Lis, Vertical Abdominoplasty

Panniculectomy   A version of mini Tummy Tuck that removes excess hanging skin and fat from the lower abdomen.

Partial Apronectomy   A version of mini Tummy Tuck that removes fat from the area below the navel.

Fleur-de-Lis   An Abdominoplasty with an additional vertical incision to remove excessive loose skin and fat from the upper and lower abdomen.

Post-Surgery Garment Suggestions   Go to Tummy Tuck to see post-surgery girdle and abdominal binder options and, when breast surgery is also undertaken, post-surgery compression bras or body suit options.

Umbilical Hernia

When fatty tissue or part of the intestine pushes through the abdomen near the navel (belly button).

Support & Compression Garments for Umbilical Hernia   Go to Umbilical Hernia to see the abdominal binder, compression girdle and shorts for living with a hernia or recovering after hernia surgery.

Under Elbow Measurement

Around the widest part, between the elbow and wrist.

Body Measurement Illustration   Shown in the Fitter’s Size Guide on each product page when needed for garment sizing.

Why is an Under Elbow Measurement Needed?   For post-surgery sleeves and vests with sleeves, measurements are used to check that the shape of the garment matches the shape of the arm. Measuring each arm checks for any difference between the left and right side.

Underbust Measurement, Under Bust Measurement

Around the chest under the breast. For females, just below the bra band.

Body Measurement Illustration   Shown in the Fitter’s Size Guide on each product page when needed for garment sizing.

Why is the Underbust Measurement Needed?   For most post-surgery, fashion and sports bras, size has two parts: the underbust measurement that determines band size and then the bust measurement that determines the cup size for that band size. Yes, cup size (volume) changes when the band size changes.

Underwires

Curved rigid wires sewn into the bottom seam of the bra cups to hold the shape of the cup and create breast separation.

Do Underwires Affect Lymph Flow After Breast Surgery?   Understanding the anatomy of a bra can reduce the risk of triggering Oedema and Lymphoedema. When lymph nodes and the vessels that drain lymphatic fluid are affected by breast surgery and/or radiation, rigid underwires create lines of pressure around the breast that can restrict lymph flow.

Upper Arm Measurement

Around the widest part, between the shoulder and elbow.

Body Measurement Illustration   Shown in the Fitter’s Size Guide on each product page when needed for garment sizing.

Why is an Upper Arm Measurement Needed?   For post-surgery sleeves and vests with sleeves, measurements are used to check that the shape of the garment matches the shape of the arm. Measuring each arm checks for any difference between the left and right side.

Varicose Veins, Varicoses

Gnarly, enlarged and twisted veins found near the surface of the skin, typically in the legs and feet.

Venous Insufficiency, Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Leg vein wall and/or valves not working effectively, making it difficult for blood to return to the heart from the legs.

Vest, Compression Vest, Post-Surgery Compression Vest, Post-Operative Vest, Post-Op Vest

A post surgery compression garment that provides compression and support to the upper torso, with style variants providing compression to the lower torso and arms.

Post Operative Vest Options   Go to Vests to see male and female garment options.

VUG Breast Reconstruction, Vertical Upper Gracilis Flap Breast Reconstruction

Creating a new breast shape by taking a 'flap' of skin, fat and the gracilis muscle (free flap) from the upper inner thigh, using a vertical incision.

What to Wear After VUG Breast Reconstruction   Go to Breast Reconstruction to learn more about surgical compression bras and girdles, comfort bras for radiation, fashion lingerie and other breast reconstruction clothing.

Waist Measurement

Around the narrow part of the body, usually mid-way between the bottom of the ribs and top of hip bone.

Body Measurement Illustration   Shown in the Fitter’s Size Guide on each product page when needed for garment sizing.

Why is a Waist Measurement Needed?   For post-surgery body suits, girdles, shorts and leggings that cover the lower torso, measurements are used to check that the shape of the garment matches the shape of the body.

Watchful Waiting

Closely watching a patient's condition but not giving treatment unless symptoms appear or change.

Weight Loss Surgery, Body Contouring Surgery

Reducing large skin folds and fat from the arms, back, lower abdomen, hips, upper buttock and/or thighs.

What to Wear After Weight Loss Surgery   Go to Weight Loss Surgery and select the type of surgery to see post-surgery compression garments and NewGel medical grade silicone scar management options. When surgery will result in a significant change in body shape, our post-op garment fitting experience suggests a STUDIO Fitting can be a better option.

Wrist Measurement

Around the arm just before the hand.

Why is a Wrist Measurement Needed?   For post-surgery vests with sleeves, lymphoedema compression sleeves, gloves and gauntlets, measurements are used to check that the shape of the garment matches the shape of the arm or hand. Measuring each arm checks for any difference between the left and right side.

Zip Fastener, Zipper

A larger version of a conventional clothing zip that may be used as the fastener on compression bras, comfort bras and compression garments.

Choosing the Right Zip Fastener   Zip fasteners can be easier to use, but it’s likely there still may be clips to manage, and they don’t allow for adjustment. A post-surgery compression bra or comfort bra with a zip can be difficult to do up if it doesn’t have a bottom starter clip to hold the bottom of the zip in position before doing it up. Post surgery compression garments with zip fastener(s) usually have clips under the zip to hold the zip together so it can be done up.
