Herniorrhaphy, Hernioplasty, Laparoscopic (Keyhole) Surgery, Watchful Waiting
Umbilical hernias can appear as a bulge on the abdomen near the navel or belly button, especially when coughing or straining.
They occur when part of the intestine or fatty tissue bulges through a likely pre-existing muscle weakness near the navel and, whilst more common in women due to pregnancy, are likely to be more acute in men.
Research suggests that surgical repair is a common diagnosis because they incarcerate and strangulate with significantly greater frequency. Depending on the diagnosis, the Surgeon may nominate a compression garment to minimise further damage and improve mobility whilst waiting for surgery or aid after surgery recovery.

Binders can be more practical for wound care and toileting after surgery. Body shape influences the choice of split/no split style.
A girdle or shorts can be more comfortable and discreet under clothing if needed before surgery or after recovery.
After sutures are removed or dissolve and skin fully closes, 100% medical grade silicone ointment and sheets act as a protective barrier over scars, reducing water evaporation and helping stop excessive scar tissue build-up.
