Individual Body & Standard Garment

Manufacturers use an hourglass like body shape when designing garments and a mathematical formula to create different sizes – but human body shape and size are individual.

Therefore, achieving a good fit can be a mix of measurement and judgement. Compression garments need measurement and judgement, compression bras rely more on measurement, fashion and sports lingerie are more complicated because measurement, judgement and personal preference affect choice. Breast form, partial form and shaper fitting depend on visual judgements about breast shape.

But achieving a good fit also needs an awareness of garment anatomy and an understanding of how to wear, adjust and care for the garment.

Breast Forms

Female

When fitting a breast form (prosthesis) to create the look of the natural breast, shape and size are important, but so are weight and feel because these are also attributes of the natural breast.

Compression Bras

Female

Whilst breast surgeries differ in how breast shape and size changes, underbust size does not change – therefore the existing underbust measurement can be used to size the post-surgery band.

Compression Garments

Male & Female

Compression garments need to provide firm and even pressure around the body and this depends on the garment being the the right shape and size for the after-surgery body.

Fashion & Sports Bras

Female

When fitting fashion and sports bras the general rule is if you need to go up a band size, then you need to go down a cup size to keep the cup size the same. All very confusing!

Partial Forms & Shapers

Female

When fitting a partial form, size, shape and thickness are used to add volume to the breast. When fitting a shaper, size and shape are used to fill the breast where tissue has been removed.

Sleeves & Stockings

Male & Female

A compression sleeve or stocking needs to have the the right shape and size to provide firm and even pressure that is highest at the wrist or ankle and then gradually reduces up the arm or leg.
