For most breast surgeries there is swelling to the breast, but little swelling to the underbust area. The exception is a DIEP breast reconstruction where swelling can increase the band size by 1 or 2 sizes.
Compression bra sizing charts vary from Australian (AU) to Product Specific (ProdSpec). An AU chart uses standard Australian sizing measurements. ProdSpec chart measurements only apply for that bra. In each case, measuring for size is the best way to determine your post-surgery bra size.
An AU Sizing Chart shows a series of underbust measurement increments (e.g. 73-77). Under each increment the corresponding band size (e.g. 12) is shown. The increment that corresponds with the existing underbust circumference verifies the post-surgery band size.
Under each band size, the sizing chart shows a column of bust measurement increments (e.g. 95-97cm). Across the row is the cup size (e.g. DD) corresponding to each measurement increment. Measuring the existing bust avoids confusion with fashion bra sizing and provides a verified starting size for the surgeon’s advice on cup size change.
Together with size, the appropriate garment anatomy is needed for post-operative wear. Generally, the soft elastic cup and adjustment of the front closure and shoulder straps can manage post-operative drain lines and swelling. For breast implants where drain lines are not needed, shoulder strap adjustment can manage swelling. For DIEP reconstruction where swelling can add 1 or 2 cup sizes to the bust and underbust, extenders may be needed to increase front and shoulder adjustment.
