Post-operative body shape depends on the surgery, body shape change and swelling. As a guide: the existing body shape approximates swelling after liposuction; for localised surgery such as a tummy tuck, measurements from above and below the area of surgery indicate a likely body shape and size; for large body shape change, a post-surgery fitting is suggested.
Compression garment sizing charts typically show measurements that are Product Specific (ProdSpec). Therefore, measuring for size is the best way to determine your post-surgery garment size.
Product Specific sizing charts nominate body locations (e.g. Chest) where the circumference of the body needs to be measured. Under each body location are a series of measurement increments (e.g. 103-109). The increment that correlates with the body measurement (e.g. 105cm) indicates the size at that body location.
When the size of each body location falls in the same row, the shape of the garment is likely to match the shape of your body. When the size at a body location is in a different row – which is not uncommon – it indicates that the garment has a different shape to the body. When there are differing size outcomes, a fitting allows for the judgement needed to achieve a good fit.
Even when the chart suggests garment and body shape match, judgement of garment anatomy is needed because sizing charts do not provide guidance on torso and leg length. For example, a longer torso can need a higher waisted girdle or shoulder strap adjustment and/or extenders for a body suit.
