Breast Reconstruction

Fitting   The surgeon nominates the compression bra or bra and abdominal garment. The two week lead time allows for any special-order sizing that may be needed when achieving a good fit.

Mastectomy   There are many variations on the sequence and timing from mastectomy to reconstruction. If there is a significant delay, a breast form may be an option for creating breast shape. Autologous or ‘Flap’ Reconstruction   Taking tissue from another part of the body to create the new breast shape allows for mastectomy-to-reconstruction surgery. After-surgery recovery garments vary depending on the location of the donor site.

Tissue Expanders & Implant Reconstruction   Tissue expanders ‘stretch’ the chest tissue to create the ‘pocket’ into which the breast implant can be inserted. After-surgery recovery garments can vary when tissue transfer is also involved.

Chemotherapy & Radiation   Radiation typically occurs before implant reconstruction, but may occur before or after autologous reconstruction. Softer, lower compression comfort bras and tops can be more comfortable for tender skin.

Scar Management   Can usually be started after sutures are removed and the skin is fully closed, but may be delayed by Chemotherapy or Radiation.

Everyday & Work   When transitioning back to fashion and sports bras, wearing a non-underwire style for 6-12 months reduces the risk of rigid underwires pressing on scarring or restricting lymph flow if the lymphatic system is compromised during radiotherapy.
