Whilst fitting before surgery is preferred, if there will be significant change in body shape, it can be better to fit after surgery. If the garment does not achieve a good fit, the surgeon will be notified and an alternative garment, or garment combination suggested for their acceptance.
The garments will usually extend beyond the area of surgery to provide the firm and even pressure that can limit swelling around the incision, promote fluid drainage and aid the reduction of swelling that does occur.
Post-surgery, garments are typically worn for 6-8 weeks. However, if swelling reduces more quickly, a second smaller garment can be needed. Depending on the surgery, the surgeon may also nominate two different garments. For example: a binder whilst in hospital because it is more practical for managing drains, wound care and toileting; and then when more mobile, a garment that is less conspicuous and more comfortable to wear under clothing.
