When there is swelling in the arm, measurements are taken to see if a standard compression sleeve with the Compression Class selected by the physiotherapist can be fitted. If a custom sleeve is needed, the measurements are used to obtain a costing from the supplier.

When there is swelling in the breast and/or chest, the physiotherapist may select a lymphoedema bra or compression vest. When swelling is more localised, the physiotherapist may request a compression bra with a pad that is worn inside the bra over the affected area.

If the band or cup is outside the lymphoedema bra range, the physiotherapist will be notified and options such as a maximum support sports bra with full breast encapsulation suggested for achieving a good fit.

Since compression garments are intended for continuous wear, it is important that you are comfortable with how the garment looks and feels because the benefit gained depends on your willingness to wear the garment.

When wanting something that is more feminine and fashionable for occasional wear, the physiotherapist is likely to suggest a non-underwire fashion bra because they distribute pressure more evenly and do not have rigid underwires that can restrict lymph flow and aggravate swelling. For exercise, they are likely to suggest a supportive non-underwire sports bra or a bather with a supportive shelf bra.
