Fitter's Product Notes
When people drop into the STUDIO they often ask if they should use the Gel or Sheet.
NewGel+UV scar management gel can be a better option if the area is exposed to the sun (e.g. neck, face, eyelids etc) because it can protect the scar from hyperpigmentation (darkening). NewGel+E can be better for areas where there is frequent movement (e.g. elbow etc).
NewGel+ sheet products can be better for areas of the body with less movement (e.g. arm, chest, breast, abdomen etc).
Depending on scar size and location, some people alternate between the sheet and gel (e.g. sheet during the day and gel at night, or vice versa).
We have found silicone gel is an easy-to-use option for scars that are seen or scars in an area where there is frequent movement such as the eyelid, neck or elbow.
We stock the smaller 15 gram tube of NewGel+UV medical grade silicone gel to provide an option for treating shorter scars (under 7.5cm) that are exposed to the sun. We stock the larger, more economical 30 gram tube of NewGel E for scars that do not need sun protection.
If you are unsure, drop into the STUDIO and look at our samples to find the right product for your scar.
Before using NewGel+, please read the product directions.
As a guide, you can start using NewGel+ after the skin has fully closed and sutures have been removed.
Do not use the gel under sheet products.
Wear NewGel+ medical grade silicone gel for at least 6 hours and up to 24 hours a day, the longer the wear the greater the benefit. With longer wear the gel will need to be reapplied 2 to 3 times daily (after showering etc). Depending on the length of wear, you could start to see results on new scars after 3 to 7 weeks, with best results likely to take up to 12 weeks. Older scars may take up to 6-months.
Why question supplier product performance and certification claims? Because we’ve learnt that marketing statements such as quick drying, medical grade silicone and long lasting are not always verified.
Components Polymerized Siloxanes (Silicone Gel) and 20% physical mineral Zinc Oxide.
Does It Work? Claim: NewGel+ is clinically proven to reduce and fade new and old scars. There are over 100 NewGel+ clinical studies showing before and after evidence of performance. NewGel+ has been available since early 2000. There seems to be consistent, positive feedback from users.
How Long Does It Last? Claim: The 15 gram tube contains enough NewGel+UV medical grade silicone gel to treat a 7-8cm long scar for up to 4 weeks when appropriately applied. 20 years of anecdotal evidence suggests this is a reasonable guide.
How Quickly Does it Dry? Claim: NewGel+UV medical grade silicone gel dries in under 5 minutes, is not shiny when dry and has a soft, silky feel. Comparative drying testing suggests NewGel+ dries 3 to 4 times faster than other gels and does not have a sheen when dry.
Is it Medical Grade Silicone? Claim: NewGel+UV is medical grade silicone with 20% Zinc Oxide that achieves an SPC 30 rating NewGel+ products are made in the US by NewMedical Technology in their ISO 13485 Certified, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Compliant and US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) Registered medical device manufacturing facility.
Does the Silicone Absorb into the Skin? Claim: NewGel+ products are highly pure and do not absorb into the skin. They do not contain parabens (cosmetic preservatives), are Gluten free and fragrance free, non-irritating and non-comedogenic (will not clog or block the pores on the skin). Biocompatibility requirements for Registered medical devise manufacturing suggest this is correct.
What is Sun Protection Component? Claim: NewGel+UV Sun Protection Factor (SPC) +30 is achieved using zinc oxide, a chemical free mineral sunscreen that does not absorb into the scar. Research suggests the type and percentage of sunblock can vary. NewGel+UV declares the percentage (20%) and type (physical mineral Zinc Oxide) sun block component. Research suggests Zinc Oxide does not absorb into the skin, is stable when exposed to UV light and has higher protection across the UVB, UVA II and UVA I spectrum.
Is it an Approved Medical Device? Claim: NewGel+ medical grade silicone sheet and gel has United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) 501(k) clearance and Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approval as a Class 1 Medical Device. We have sighted the US FDA clearance and the TGA Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods Certificate (ARTG 199299).
