Product Notes

To better manage post-operative swelling, garments usually extend beyond the area of surgery. Review the product information to verify that the garment width provides sufficient vertical cover.

Whilst in hospital, a split panel binder can be a more practical option. Drain lines can be fitted between the panels, individual panels can be undone for wound care, and the bottom panel can be undone and turned up when toileting.

Binders can also be more flexible when managing post-operative swelling size change. A split panel binder tends to be easier to put on and adjust than a non-split binder because the narrower panels are fitted individually and more easily adjusted to the shape of the abdomen. Starting at the top, each panel is wrapped around the abdomen, stretched to give a firm fit, and then the Velcro fastener closed.

When swelling reduces and mobility improves, a compression garment can be a more comfortable and discreet second garment option to wear under clothing.

Measuring Tips

Measure to the nearest centimetre.

A flexible cloth tape is best. Alternatively, use non-stretch fabric or a belt, mark the size and then measure the length with a metal tape or ruler. Avoid string because it presses into the skin and flexible metal tapes because they wrap unevenly.

Having someone else measure is better. Wear underwear, stand still and upright, relax and breathe out, then measure against the skin. If self-measuring, use a mirror to check posture and that the tape is level and wrapped firmly (but not tightly) around the body.

Sizing Suggestions

Binder width is usually determined by the cover needed for the garment to extend beyond the area of surgery (incision) or the immediate area needing support or compression in the case of a hernia.

For tummy tuck or weight loss surgery, when body shape will change, the waist can be a useful guide for sizing the post-surgery garment size.

If the abdomen is distorted by a hernia, measuring around the widest part of the body needing support can be a better sizing guide.

Width can be affected by torso length. For a longer torso, a wider binder may be needed to provide appropriate cover. For a shorter torso, a narrower binder may need to avoid it pressing into the bra band (female) or groin when sitting.
