Research suggests that hernias can range from asymptomatic (no symptoms) and minimally symptomatic (little or no discomfort) through to chronic (inoperable).
The choice between watchful waiting (pro-active management) and surgical repair appears to depend on the type of hernia, symptoms and individual circumstances. Given the potential benefits of acting quickly and the risks associated with inaction, prompt medical diagnosis appears the better option.
