Lymphoedema
Female
Complimenting Treatment

In the fitting room the first steps are to understand where the swelling is occurring, to talk about the garment selected by the Physiotherapist and to take body measurements.

When arm compression is needed, measurements determine whether a standard or custom sleeve size is needed.

For chest, breast and/or underarm swelling, location and personal preference influence selection because the benefit gained from compression depends on how well the garment targets the area of swelling and on the pattern of wear.

A lymphoedema bra provides compression to the breast, underarm and back. A vest can provide more compression to the chest and higher up under the arm but might not feel like a bra. A maximum support sports bra can provide firm and even compression for larger breasts. A compression bra with a wide side band can be used to target underarm swelling. For each of these options, placing a compression pad inside the bra or vest can provide additional and/or targeting compression for localised swelling.

Fitting the sleeve, bra and/or vest allows for discussion of how feelings about ‘tightness of fit’ might affect the ‘good fit’ needed for compression – and seeing the garment on is a better way to decide about the look of the garment.

A corsetiere was a specialist in making and fitting what today are called lingerie and compression garments.

Their 'art' was founded on knowledge, experience, informed questioning and observation, and brought to life in the fitting room.

As specialist garment fitters, the 'art of the corsetiere' captures the essence of what we do - fit garments to the individual body shapes of men and women.
