Fitter's Product Notes
When people drop into the STUDIO they often ask if they should use the Sheet or Gel.
NewGel+ scar management sheetproducts can be better for areas of the body with less movement (e.g. arm, chest, breast, abdomen etc). Gel products can be better for areas where there is frequent movement (e.g. elbow etc) or areas that are seen or exposed to the sun (e.g. neck, face, eyelids etc).
Depending on scar size and location, some people alternate between the sheet and gel (e.g. sheet during the day and gel at night, or vice versa).
We have found the NewGel+ medical grade silicone Anchor Shape suits a curved scar under the breast and vertical scar below the nipple or, with the straight leg trimmed off, a curved scar under the breast.
To check that the Anchor Shape is the right size for your scar(s), click through to the Shape & Size illustration above then compare it with your scar area measurements. The shape needs to extend at least 1cm beyond all edges around the scar. If needed the shape can be cut or trimmed to size with scissors.
If you are unsure, PHONE or drop into the STUDIO and look at our samples to find the right product for your scar.
Before using NewGel+, please read the product directions.
As a guide, you can start using NewGel+ after the skin has fully closed and sutures have been removed.
Do not use the gel under sheet products.
Wear NewGel+ medical grade silicone sheets for at least 6 hours and up to 24 hours a day, the longer the wear the greater the benefit. With longer wear you can usually start to see results on new scars after 3 to 7 weeks, with best results likely to take up to 12 weeks. Older scars may take up to 6-months.
Why question supplier product performance and certification claims? Because we’ve learnt that marketing statements such as quick drying, medical grade silicone and long lasting are not always verified.
Components The NewGel+ sheet we stock has a stretchy elastane (spandex) backing layer, a 1mm thick layer of self-adhesive medical grade silicone sheet and a removable polyurethane liner over the self-adhesive surface.
The medical grade silicone is made from medical grade polymerized siloxanes (silicone gel).
Does It Work? Claim: NewGel+ is clinically proven to reduce and fade new and old scars. There are over 100 NewGel+ clinical studies showing before and after evidence of performance. NewGel+ has been available since early 2000. There seems to be consistent, positive feedback from users.
How Long Does It Last? Claim: The self-adhesive surface on NewGel+ medical grade silicone sheet can last for up to 4 weeks. 20 years of anecdotal evidence suggests this is a reasonable guide. Research suggests the life of the self-adhesive surface can depend on appropriate care. Loss of adhesion does not diminish the performance. NewGel+ medical grade silicone sheet can be held in place with medical grade tape or a pressure sleeve.
Is it Medical Grade Silicone? Claim: NewGel+ is made from medical grade silicone NewGel+ products are made in the US by NewMedical Technology in their ISO 13485 Certified, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Compliant and US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) Registered medical device manufacturing facility.
Does the Silicone Absorb into the Skin? Claim: NewGel+ products are highly pure and do not absorb into the skin. They do not contain parabens (cosmetic preservatives), are Gluten free and fragrance free, non-irritating and non-comedogenic (will not clog or block the pores on the skin). Biocompatibility requirements for Registered medical device manufacturing suggest this is correct.
Is it an Approved Medical Device? Claim NewGel+ medical grade silicone sheet and gel has United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) 501(k) clearance and Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approval as a Class 1 Medical Device. We have sighted the US FDA clearance and the TGA Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods Certificate (ARTG 199299).
